1910 Jul 28 – Nurse Edwards Drowned

A telegram was received in town Sunday by relatives, conveying the very sad intelligence that Nurse Edwards who was only last October graduated from the Dauphin Hospital, had been drowned by the overturning of a canoe at Chapleau, Ont. Deceased young lady was well known to many of our citizens, who learned of her untimely death with feelings of sorrow. She was 25 years of age. The following dispatch from Chapleau gives the particulars of the accident:

Chapleau, July 26 – Just as she was on the point of being saved after a long struggle for her life in Lake Chapleau, east of here, Miss Elma Edwards, a trained nurse, lost her hold on an unturned canoe and was drowned.
Miss Edwards was canoeing with E.A. Allen, a railway man, and the accident occurred when she tried to change her sea. Although the frantic girl tore Allen’s shirt and tie to shreds he managed to get her partially on top of the canoe and started to propel it to shore. The girl’s widowed mother lives at Chapleau.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. C. Leach left for Chapleau on Monday to attend the funeral. Mrs. Leach is a sister of Miss Edwards.
